Greener Shipping Summit: “A long way forward” was successfully conducted in Ledra Marriott on 13Nov12, organised by Naftiliaki Newsfront under the auspices of Martecma.
It is reported that over 230 participants from 150 companies and 10 countries attended the event, with interesting presentations, addressing the environmental awareness and performance of the Industry, the LNG as fuel option, eco design and technical measures to meet the emergy saving challenge, the role of class, developments on scrubbers and ballast water treatment.
The enhanced environmental awareness of the Industry, and particularly ship managers, was demonstrated once more with the conclusion that marine industry is definitely an environment friendly industry, particularly compared with the other modes of transportation. It was realised that this message should be communicated to the society in a more effective manner. It was also concluded that Class societies should look at the business in a more holistic approach, in order to provide better service to the industry being in the middle of a regulatory storm. To this effect ClassSocieties should adopt practical and compatible rules, involve the shipmanagers at the early stage of rules making or amending or implementing and then use the Class Technical committes as vehicle for this pro-active approach.
